Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family, it was looked after by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young teenager. Ford began to be interested in acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor for the school. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor, which she began adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
